Tims Ford Lake offers 10,700 acres of gorgeous water and 241 miles of picturesque shoreline, and it is a true boater’s paradise. But one question we hear frequently is “how busy is it?” Well, one thing is for certain, times have changed. Gone are the days of 20 plus years ago when this lake was still a happy little secret tucked away in the rolling hills of southern Middle Tennessee. Tims Ford has become the place to be. With its close proximity to Nashville, Huntsville, and Chattanooga, it is no wonder why either. We love it here, as do many others obviously. So what can you really expect out on the water? Let’s look at it a from a few different ways.
January – March
Bundle up and ride on! There is very little boat activity during these months. While the average high temperatures are usually in the 45-50 degree range, that’s just a little cold for us southern folks, lol. This time of year the jet skis, wake boats, pontoons, and general pleasure boaters have tucked away their toys for the winter, and you will mainly just see the brave fisherman out searching for a big catch. Most days the lake is a beautiful ghost town though.
April – August
Things really start to pick up in April and May, and by June – hold onto your hats, it is like rush hour traffic in Nashville during a thunderstorm apocalypse! Ok, that may be a little exaggerated, but you get the idea. It’s hard to have a lake this awesome and it not be busy on a sunny Summer weekend. Expect the water to be choppy and the marinas to be bustling with summer vibes and activity.
If you search around a little you can always find a calmer cove to chill out in. Tims Ford has a plethora of long arms and pockets perfect for chilling and relaxing. If you are a weekend warrior, just be prepared for the crowds.
The good news is most of your fellow boaters are very kind, but keep in mind not all have much experience on the water. And like anything anywhere, there is always that one person whose mother never taught them any manners. So keep an eye out and be safe!
The weekdays see much lighter traffic, and that is when us locals love to get out and enjoy the water. I will say that since the whole “work from home” craze has begun it seems busier during the week, but still nothing like the weekends. Early mornings are also a great time to head out, even on the weekends.
September – December
The Fall and early Winter months can be spectacular! The kids are all back in school and the lake calms down, and Mother Nature starts to display her dazzling Fall foliage. Some still ski or wake surf into early October, and it is a marvelous time for a pontoon cruise and some fishing.
So how busy it is really depends on the time of year and the day of the week. But one thing is certain – good times and great memories are made here at the lake every day of the year. It is our happy place. And if you haven’t visited, come treat yourself! We think there might just be enough room for one more…
