About 25 years ago I made my first trip to Tims Ford Lake. My dad and I rented a cabin at Tims Ford Marina. We couldn’t have been more excited as the weather forecast was perfect and we had our new bass boat all shined up and ready to go. In what has become one of my most cherished memories with my father, I caught a huge 5.75 lb smallmouth bass the very first afternoon we were there. I remember that moment like it was yesterday. Funny thing, we didn’t catch another fish all week long! But we had such a great time. We rode around the lake, admiring the homes on the water, and talked about how great it would be to own one. Ever since that week I dreamed of living on the lake.
A few years ago, along with my wife Laci, that dream became a reality! We bought our dream home on Tims Ford Lake. Oh sure, there are fancier homes on the lake, but this one is perfect for us. It felt like home the moment we walked through the door.
So, is the REALITY as good as the DREAM? Absolutely!!
For us there is nothing like being able to see the lake every morning when we wake up. To jump on our boat in a moments notice to go for a cruise. To watch the wildlife that surrounds the lake. The sights, sounds, even the smell of the lake. We truly think it is good for our soul. It brings a peace to us. It revitalizes us. It is our happy place.
Of course we had to learn a few things about lake life…
- One thing is that most conversations when meeting a new neighbor start with, “So do you live here full time?” You see, for many a lake home is a second home. Many in our neighborhood are only down for the weekends in the summer. During the week and in the winter things are pretty quiet. Now don’t let that make you think that there isn’t a sense of community. That’s the second thing we learned…
- Lake people are like family. Our neighbors are all like part of a special club. No one cares how much money you make, or what you drive, or how big your house is. You live at the lake. That’s all that matters. We are friends. Our neighborhood even has a ladies group that gets together for brunch once a month. The sense of community is stronger here than anywhere we have ever lived.
- The next thing we learned was the pure joy of driving your boat to one of the four great marinas on the lake for breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is just something special about taking a pontoon ride to your next meal. It’s simply a part of living the Lake Life that you just have to take advantage of.
There are a few more things we have learned, but I will save those for another post. I promise, I will share all the secrets!
The main thing is, YES, the lake life is as good as advertised. The deep, clear water of Tims Ford Lake is amazing. The memories made here are priceless. And the “honey hole” where I caught that giant smallmouth? Well, that’s one secret I will be keeping to myself. But I will tell you this. I go by it almost daily. Occasionally I will stop. Sometimes I will try my luck again. Other times I just relax, and soak in that magical afternoon with my dad all over again…
