We are often asked by clients moving to our area if there are any golf courses nearby.
As luck would have it, we have several great options. Now we don’t profess to know a lot about golf (unless putt putt counts, lol), however we did decide to do some in depth research as well as ask several of our golfing friends about the nearby courses and what their favorites were. Knowledge is power, right? So if you would like to hit the links while visiting the Tims Ford Lake area or you are thinking about moving here, we hope this information is helpful!
The 9 hole course at Scenic View features 3,160 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36. The course rating is 33.6 and the slope rating is 114. Designed by James Stephens, the course opened in 1972. There are three practice holes, so you actually get to play 12 holes. The tees and fairways are Bermuda, but the greens are Bent Grass. The course is open play, so no tee times are required. Family owned and operated, the staff is always friendly, and there is a PGA Professional on site. Challenging for its size, and a popular with the locals, Scenic View gets a solid recommendation.
The 9 hole course here features 3,279 yards of golf for a par of 36. The course rating is 36 and the slope rating is 129. Originally opened all the way back in 1915, the course was completely redesigned by Gil Hanse in 2013. If you haven’t heard of Gil, just do a quick Google search and you will find that he has an impressive resume, including Golf magazine’s Architect of the Year in 2009, and The Course at Sewanee does not disappoint! The course is truly fun for any golfer, and provides different sets of tees to make a round of 18 feel like you are playing a totally different course at times. Even better, the surrounding scenery is amazing. Complimented by the Sewanee Inn and a new golf lodge, this is a must visit for any golfer in the area.
Arnold Golf Course is Arnold Air Force Base’s military golf course. The good news is that you don’t have to be military to play. The course has obtained a waiver and it is open for public play. The course offers 9 holes with two sets of tees, making for an enjoyable 18 rounds over the 3,193 yard, par 35/36 course. Arnold also offers a full driving range, practice chipping and putting greens, a practice bunker, and a unique Foot Golf course (don’t laugh, it’s fun!)
Make sure you stop by the Pro Shop to check out the available gear and stop for a bite to eat at the popular Mulligan’s Grill inside the clubhouse. There’s no need to leave hungry!
The Jack Nicklaus designed course at Tims Ford features an intriguing 6,764 yard layout with several different looks. Champion Bermuda greens and 419 Bermuda fairways gently roll across fromer pasture land and transition to wooded sites with giant oak trees. Beautiful Tims Ford Reservoir is visible from some of the 18 holes and you will more than likely see a few deer roaming around as well. The slope is 128, with a rating of 72.7 and a par of 71. Located inside Tims Ford State Park, the Bear Trace is a great balance of challenge and playability.
Old Stone Fort Golf Course is one of the most scenic courses in the state. The area it sits on was occupied at one time by Indians for some 300 years. You can even still see an Indian mound between Hole #1 and #9! You will likely see plenty of wildlife as well, everything from deer, beavers, turkey and otters to turtles and many species of birds. Reopened in 2017 and surrounded by the Duck River, Old Stone Fort offers 9 holes on 3,023 yards with a par 36. Make sure to check out Old Stone Fort State Park as well.

The 18 hole, 6,613 yard course has a par of 72, and offers five sets of tees to make the course as challenging or enjoyable as you like. The scenery is beautiful, with ponds, creeks, wildlife, and Lake Tullahoma as your backdrop. There is also a driving range, short game area with targets, a putting green, and a clubhouse featuring the 19th Hole Bar & Grill. With Bent grass greens and Bermuda grass fairways, a driving range, a Pro Shop and amenities such as a pool and lighted tennis courts, Lakewood is a golfer’s paradise!
